Red Flags When Buying Research Peptides
The quickest way to judge a research-peptide supplier is to look at what they will not show you. Almost every real red flag comes down to missing testing paperwork or a seller you cannot reach. Price is the flag people fixate on, and it matters least. Here is what should actually make you close the tab.
No per-lot certificate of analysis
If a store cannot show you a lab report for the exact lot you are buying, stop there. A certificate that covers "the product" in general, or one from a batch tested last year, tells you nothing about the vial that will arrive at your bench. Every lot is a separate manufacturing run and needs its own report. Ours are published as downloadable PDFs on each batch page, tested at independent labs like BT Labs in West Palm Beach and Krause Analytical in Austin. No per-lot COA is the single biggest flag on this list, and it usually predicts the rest.
Purity with no identity, or a number with no chromatogram
A purity percentage on its own is half a test. Purity tells you how much of the active fraction is the target compound. It says nothing about whether that compound is the one on the label, which is a separate question answered by mass spectrometry. You can have a 99% pure sample of the wrong peptide. A report that gives you a purity figure but never confirms identity has skipped the part that catches a substitution.
The same goes for a bare number with no trace behind it. If the certificate says "99.4%" but never prints the actual chromatogram, you are trusting a typed figure that anyone can type. A real HPLC result shows the peak, the retention time, and the baseline around it, read at a stated wavelength, usually 220 nm for peptide bonds. Self-tested only, or a generic 99%+ badge
"Tested in-house" is not third-party testing. When the lab and the seller are the same entity, nobody independent has checked the work, and the number is a company grading its own homework. A round "99%+ purity" badge stamped on every product with no lab name, no method, and no date is decoration, not data. Real certificates name the lab, name the method, and reference the specific lot.
A certificate that does not match the lot
Check that the numbers on the PDF correspond to the vial in front of you. The lot or batch code on the certificate should match the code on the label. The compound name, the CAS number, and the fill mass should line up too. Attaching any COA to a page is easy. A COA that actually matches the batch, down to the lot code, is the thing worth trusting. A mismatch means either sloppiness or a recycled document, and neither one gets more comforting the longer you look at it.
No research-use-only language anywhere
Read how the store talks about its products. Everything in this category is sold as a laboratory reagent for research use only, not for human or veterinary use, and in Canada these compounds carry no DIN. A supplier that says so plainly, gates the site by age, and asks for a research-use attestation at checkout is showing you it follows rules even when they are inconvenient. A store that instead publishes usage advice is telling you it bends rules when convenient, and you should assume the lab paperwork gets the same treatment. Product pages should read like reference sheets: CAS 137525-51-0, formula C62H98N16O22, sequence, storage conditions. Identity data, not promises.
The price is too good
A vial priced well under everyone else is not generosity. Independent per-lot testing is not free, and neither is real material or shipping a tracked parcel. When a listing sits at a fraction of the going rate, a corner has been cut, and it is usually the testing. Cheap with no certificate is not a deal. It is a guess you paid for.
Nobody answers
Before you order, find out whether a human is reachable. A working contact method and an actual reply when you ask a question are the difference between a supplier and a checkout page that may or may not ship. - No lot-specific COA from an independent lab
- Purity with no identity confirmation, or no chromatogram to look at
- Self-tested only, or a generic 99%+ badge with no lab, method, or date
- A certificate whose lot code does not match the label
- No research-use-only terms, no age gate, no attestation
- A price far below everyone else
- No reachable human behind the store
